Q - 21 terms
QUALITY - Denotes the suitability of a fastener for the purpose for which it is intended. It should not be confused with precision or workmanship as it is possible that precision of good workmanship and finish can be poor quality if they fail to perform as they were intended to. Also good quality parts do not always require precision of fine finish to serve as intended. Optimally a quality fastener should posses all of the beneficial characteristics above.
QUALITY SYSTEM - Is the organizational structure, responsibilities, procedures, processes and resources for implementing quality management.
QUECHING - Rapid cooling. When applicable, the following more specific terms should be used: Direct Quenching, Fog Quenching, Hot Quenching, Interrupted Quenching, Selective Quenching, Slack Quenching, Spray Quenching and Time Quenching.
QUECHING, DIRECT - Quenching carbonized parts directly from the carburizing operation.
QUECHING, FOG - Quenching in a mist.
QUECHING, HOT - An imprecise term used to over a variety of quenching procedures in which a quenching medium is maintained at a prescribed temperature above 160F (71C). Interrupted Quenching: A quenching procedure in which the workpiece is removed from the first quench at a temperature substantially higher than that of the quenchant and is then subjected to a second quenching system having a different cooling rate than the first.
QUENCH CRACKS - Surface discontinuities in an irregular or erratic pattern on the surface of the fastener which may occur because of excessive thermal or transformation stresses during fastener heat treatment.
QUENCH HARDENING - Hardening a ferrous alloy by austenitizing and then cooling rapidly enough so that some or all the austenite transforms to martensite.
QUENCHING - The rapid cooling of a metal from elevated temperatures during the heat treatment process by means of immersing the metal in a quenching medium. Quenching mediums include oil, water, and air.
QUENCHING (Rapid Cooling) - When applicable, the following more specific terms should be used: direct quenching, fog quenching, hot quenching, interrupted quenching, selective quenching, spray quenching, and time quenching.
QUENCHING, SELECTIVE - Quenching only certain portions of a workpiece.
QUENCHING, SLACK - The incomplete hardening of steel due to quenching from the austenitizing temperature at a rate slower than the critical cooling rate for the particular steel, resulting in the formation of one or more transformation products in addition to martensite.
QUENCHING, SPRAY - Quenching in a spray of liquid
QUENCHING, TIME - Interrupted quenching in which the duration of holding in the quenching medium is controlled
QUEUE TIME - The time a product spends awaiting the next processing step.
QUICK CHANGE INSERTS - Tool sections or parts which may be changed without removing the entire tool from the press.
QUICK DIE CHANGE (QDC) - A system employed to decrease die transition time, i.e. the reduction of upper and lower die clamping time.
QUICK- RELEASE - Mechanism commonly used in bit holders and extensions that has a retractable sleeve that when extended quickly releases the bit avoiding the need for force or pressure to remove it.
QUIKCALC / QUICKCALCPLUS - A software package developed by National Machinery to aid with die design calculations.
QUILL - The stationary tooling component of the cutoff mechanism. it can be a one piece or inserted assembly.
QUILL - Common on manual milling machines and drill presses, the quill is a spindle feature that raises and lowers the spindle cartridge using a rack and pinion without moving the entire head.
