YIELD CONTROLLED TIGHTENING - A fastener tightening method which allows a fastener to be tightened to yield. The angle of rotation of the fastener is measured relative to the applied torque, yield being assessed when the slope of the relationship changes to below a certain value. Sometimes called joint controlled tightening.

YIELD DESIGN LOAD - The product of the yield factor of safety, the fitting factor, and the limit load. Also referred to as Design Yield Load

YIELD POINT - The stress necessary to produce an elongation under load of 0.50 per cent of the specimen's original length. Expressed as psi.

YIELD STRENGTH - The stress at which a material exhibits a specified limiting set, permanent deformation, commonly taken by the offset method as 0.2% of the specimen's original length. This the point where the elastic region of the material being tested intersects the stress strain curve. Expressed as psi.

YIELD STRENGTH - A yield strength or yield point of a material is the stress point at which a material begins to deform plastically. Any time before the yield point, the material will deform elastically and should regain its original shape when the applied stress is removed. Once the material is stressed beyond the yield point, some portion of the deformation will be permanent and non-reversible.

YIELD STRENGTH (SY) - The stress at which a material exhibits initial plastic deformation.
