K - 29 terms

K-FACTOR - In bolt tensioning refers to the friction and thread tolerance factors of an internal and external thread combination that can affect torque values. The factor in the torque tightening equation: T=KDF where T is the fastener tightening torque in Newton metres, D is the fastener diameter in metres. FD is the fasteners preload in Newtons and K is a factor whose value is often taken as 0.2. The formula gives the approximate tightening torque for standard fasteners used under normal conditions. The K factor is also known as the nut factor and the torque coefficient.

K-MONEL - Nickel-Copper-Aluminum-alloy. Very corrosion resistant. The inclusion of aluminum (and occasionally titanium) enhances the mechanical strength in comparison to Monel.

KAIZEN - The philosophy that every process can and should be continually evaluated and improved in terms of the time required, resources used, resultant quality, etc.

KANBAN - A card or sheet used to authorize production or movement of an item. When fully implemented, kanban operates according to the following rules: 1. All production and movement of parts and material takes place only as required by a downstream operation. 2. The specific tool which authorizes production or movement is called a kanban. The word means card or sign but can refer to containers or devices. 3. The quantity authorized per individual kanban is minimal, ideally one. The number of circulating kanban for an item is determined by the demand rating time required to produce or acquire it.

KANO MODEL - A methodology to analyze customer needs by considering dissatisfiers, satisfiers, and delighters.

KEL-F(R) (PCTFE) (PLASTICS) - Polychlorotrifluoroethylene is highly transparent. It also exhibits good electrical properties, and is resistant to most common solvents at room temperature. PCTFE is less permeable to gasses and water vapor than any other transparent film.

KEY - A single lug of metal applied at the intersetction of the head and shank. It engages a mating notch in the panel to provide increased spin-out resistance. The required notch in the panel is often difficult to produce and the insert must be carefully aligned during installation.

KEY THREADS™ - The key thread is a new geometry that resists loads spherical as opposed to linearly. An example would be a key threaded disk on the ceiling that fully engages in a quarter turn. Patent Issued.

KEY-REX® DRIVE - KEY-REX® is Patented worldwide is the most secure tamper-proof screw, bolt or nut in the market. Designed to simply not be removed by anyone BUT the owner - ever. Manufactured by Bryce Fastener.

KEYED - A style of blind threaded insert that uses a key for increased spin-out resistance.

KEYSLOT - The recess cut for Woodruff keys produced by sinking a milling cutter of the right diameter and width into a shaft.

KEYSTONE - Derived from the definition of "wedge" shaped stone. This term refers to the "edge" shaped cross section as a result of edgewinding flat wire.

KEYWAY - A groove or slot cut to fit a key. A key fits into a key seal and slides into a keyway.

KICKOUT - The ejection of the formed part from either the tools or the die. This is done using either pins or sleeves inside the tooling.

KIP - A kip is a unit of force equal to 1000 pounds. Often, when expressing stresses or pressures, kips per square inch (ksi) are given.

KITTING - A process whereby one packages an assortment of fasteners and other components in a kit for later assembly.

kN - Kilo Newton; an SI (metric) unit of measurement used to describe force. One kilo Newton is equal to 1000 newtons.

KNOCKOUT - A mechanism for releasing workpieces from a die.

KNOCKOUT MARK - A small protrusion, such as a button or ring of flash, resulting from the depression of a knockout pin from the forging pressure, or the entrance of metal between the knockout pin and the die.

KNOCKOUT PIN - A power-operated plunger installed in a die to aid removal of the finished forging.

KNOOP HARDNESS - A hardness sale that uses a diamond shaped indenter.

KNUCKLE JOINT - A type of press machine that transmits force to the slide via a hinged pin (knuckle joint) mechanism that operates by means of a crankshaft and connection. The system is deals for embossing, coining, extruding, and trimming.

KNURL - Checkered or straight notches on the outside diameter of a part. A tooth pattern applied to a part to give it resistance to rotation.

KNURL PLATFORM - In screw machine work the stop which is present on the part before the knurling operation.

KNURLED CLINCHING RING - The displacer portion of a fastener, which has corrugations and is used to develop torque resistance when installed in sheet metal.

KNURLING - The process of producing a roughened surface by means of a specialized forming tool called a knurl. The ridges (knurls) on the exterior of the fastener that provide increased torque-to-turn resistance or other performance enhancement. Commonly done on the head of a socket head cap screws.

KPIV - Stands for key process input variables.

KPOV - Stands for key process output variables.

KYNAR(R) (PDVF) (PLASTICS) - Polyvinylidene fluorides has a useful temperature range of -148F to 320F. It has good strength, creep resistance and weatherability; Like some other chlorinated engineering plastics, it will not support combustion in air.
