V - 25 terms

V DIE - Tool used in conjunction with a V punch.

V PUNCH - Vee shaped tool used for angle forming.

V-SHAPED THREAD - A standard thread form that has symmetrical flank angles with a 60-degree included angle. The V-shaped threads is the most common thread form for fasteners.

VACUUM FURNACE - A furnace using low atmospheric pressures instead of a protective gas atmosphere like most heat-treating furnaces. Vacuum furnaces are categorized as hot wall or cold wall, depending on the location of the heating and insulating components.

VACUUM FURNACE - A furnace using low atmospheric pressures instead of a protective gas atmospheric like moist=heat-treating furnaces. Vacuum furnaces are categorized as hot wall or cold wall, depending on the location of the heating and insulating components.

VALUE - From the perspective of the customer, value represents those aspects or features of products or services that they are willing to pay for.

VALUE STREAM - The specific activities required to design, and provide a specific product, from the concept to launch, from order to delivery

VALUE-ADDED - Those steps that transform raw materials or activities directly into the features for which the customer assigns value.

VAPOR BLAST - A manufacturing technique that will apply a fine texture to a hardened piece of steel.

VAPOUR DEGREASING - Degreasing by solvent vapours condensing on the work pieces being cleaned.

VENT - A small hole in a punch or die for admitting air to avoid suction holding or for relieving pockets of trapped air that would prevent die closure or action.

VENT - A small hole or groove(s) in the tooling providing for the escape of air and oil from a tooling cavity.

VENT MARK - A small protrusion resulting from the entrance of metal into die vent holes.

VENTED FASTENERS - Screws, bolts and washers that feature a hollow core to release gases and pressure through the middle of the fastener. Also called Clean-Room fasteners because they are often used in clean rooms.

VERTICAL MACHINING CENTER - A machine used for operations that require a vertical spindle.

VH FACTOR - In self-clinching fastener design, the ratio of the voume of the displaced material to the volume of material contained within the mounting hole.

VIA - Small holes on the solder pad that allow for conductivity through the board.

VIBRATION - Vibration generally loosens a bolt load very slowly over time. It is common for bolts that are subject to vibration to remain tight over a long period and then loosen quickly. If your application is subject to vibration, it is always wise to test the application to determine which fasteners may lessen this property.

VIBRATORY FINISHING - Burr removal process in which an appropriate number of parts, depending on the part size and abrasive material, is accelerated and decelerated by mechanical means inside of a drum-like enclosure.

VICKERS HARNESS TEST - A method to measure hardness of materials with a diamond indenter. See Diamond Pyramid Hardness Test. Hardness test and scale commonly used in the metric system. Qualifies a material's resistance to indentation.

VIRTUAL EFFECTIVE DIAMETER - The effective diameter of a thread but allowing for errors in pitch and flank angles.

VISUAL CONTROL - The placement in plain view, of all the tools, parts, production activities, and indicators or production system performance, such that the status of the system can be easily and quickly understood.

VOC - A term meaning an activity to hear the voice of the customer!

VOID - Shallow pocket or hollow on the surface of a fastener

VOLUME RATIO - In self-clinching fastener design the ration of displace volume to undercut volume.
